Human-in-the-loop

A self-improvement loop in which a person reviews each change before it is applied. Contrast with human-on-the-loop (humans audit outcomes and gate deployment) and closed loop (no human review).

Handbook · Agents and self-improvementSelf-improvement and evaluator co-evolutionWhen a system can change what defines "better", the evaluator becomes the load-bearing wall. What changes, who validates, how loops fail.
Human-on-the-loop
An automatic signal drives the loop, while humans audit outcomes and gate deployment. Contrast with human-in-the-loop (a human reviews each change) and closed loop (no human review).
Closed loop
A self-improvement loop in which the system generates, validates, and applies its own improvements without human review. Open-ended RSI is a closed loop that can also modify its own evaluator.
