Compensability
2InstrumentThe assumption that a high score on one criterion can offset a low score on another. A weighted mean asserts it; a gate or a lexicographic order denies it. It is a normative claim, never a default.
Defined in
Handbook · InstrumentAggregation geometryWeighted means assume strengths can offset weaknesses; gates assert some failures are fatal. How criteria combine is a normative decision, so make it explicitly.Related terms
- Aggregation geometry
- The rule that combines criterion-level signals into a decision: weighted mean, conjunctive gate, lexicographic order, Pareto vector, or tail-risk rule.
- Conjunctive gate
- An aggregation rule that accepts only if every required criterion clears its threshold, Γ(z) = ∏ᵢ 𝟙[zᵢ ≥ θᵢ]. Nothing compensates a missed gate, so it encodes fatal failures such as forbidden actions.
